The Sudan crisis: 33.7 million people urgently need humanitarian aid
Last updated 13 April 2026
Today, Sudan faces one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Three years of conflict has left millions struggling without the basics needed to survive.
Since the conflict began in April 2023, up to 150,000 people have been killed, making it the world’s fourth deadliest conflict. Millions of people all over the country don’t have access to the essentials needed to survive: food, clean water and healthcare.
Over 33 million people need humanitarian aid:
- over 30 per cent of the population has been displaced, a total of nearly 14 million people.
- 3.2 million children under five could suffer from acute malnutrition this year.
- 40 per cent of hospitals are out of service.
- one in every seven internally displaced people in the world is Sudanese.
Red Cross and Red Crescent teams are working in the country now, to support communities at breaking point. Help people in crisis in Sudan and around the world – donate to the Disaster Fund now
How is the Red Cross helping people in Sudan?
With its 75,000 volunteers, the Sudanese Red Crescent Society, has been supporting people in all 18 states of Sudan since the beginning of the crisis.
Since then, they have:
- reached 8.8 million people with humanitarian aid.
- helped provide 1.25 million people with shelter.
- provided cash support to more than 8,000 people in Khartoum and White Nile.
- supported more than 163,000 people on the move with first aid, psychosocial support, safe water and hygiene facilities.
The International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and other National Societies are also working together on their response.
That includes:
- providing essential support to 1.1 million people across the country
- distributing over 22,000 hot meals.
- ensuring that 500,000 people have access to sufficient clean water.
- admitting 23,000 people to hospital for surgical operations.
The British Red Cross is helping support the response in Sudan through our Disaster Fund, as well as other specialist support, which includes cash assistance for families experiencing severe levels of food insecurity.
In Chad, where more than 890,000 Sudanese refugees have fled, the British Red Cross works closely with the Chad Red Cross, funding and collaborating on programmes across the country. These programmes include providing access to clean and safe drinking water and distributing food and hygiene supplies.
